The white elephant gift that gets stolen is rarely the most expensive one in the pile. It is the one the whole room understands the second the paper comes off, and the one people want to get their hands on right there at the party. A small wooden game or puzzle does both. We are Creative Crafthouse, a family puzzle and game company in Hudson, Florida, and these are the seven we would bring to a swap this year. Six of them are under $25, and the seventh is just over $30.
Creative Crafthouse has made wooden puzzles and games since 2003. Every order ships from our Hudson, Florida workshop. Prices below were checked on October 7, 2026 and can change.

What makes a white elephant gift get stolen
When we pick something for a gift swap, the first thing we ask is whether it explains itself. A gift that needs a rulebook or a long story gets a polite nod and stays put. A pendulum that answers questions, or ten pennies and a board that says "insert 10 pennies," gets it the moment it is unwrapped.
Next, can people do something with it right there? Once a gift starts getting passed around and tried, somebody usually decides they want it, and that is where the stealing starts. A puzzle or a quick game does this better than almost anything else in the pile.
It also has to suit anyone, since you have no idea who will go home with it, and it should be something worth keeping after the party. The gag that ends up in a drawer by New Year's is rarely the one people fight over. And stay inside the price limit, because going over it puts everyone else in an awkward spot.

How a white elephant swap works
Everyone brings one wrapped gift inside the agreed price limit, and everyone draws a number. Player one opens a gift. From then on, each player either opens a new gift or steals one that has already been opened. If your gift gets stolen, you open a new one or steal from someone else, though most groups do not let you steal straight back the gift that was just taken from you. Most groups also cap how many times one gift can be stolen, usually at two or three, and after that it is frozen with whoever holds it. Many groups give player one a last chance to swap at the end, since they opened first and never got to steal. Depending on where you live, you may know it as a Yankee Swap or Dirty Santa.
A few house rules we like
If one of the puzzles above is in the pile, try a five-minute rule: anyone who solves the 10 Penny Puzzle or the Dime Dilemma before their next turn gets to freeze it. If the Decision Maker shows up early, let it settle disputes, like whether a steal counts. And if your group still has energy after the last gift, whoever ends up with Penny Drop deals everyone in for one round.
Engraving: skip the name
Most of these picks can be laser-engraved, but a white elephant gift goes to whoever ends up holding it, so a name is a gamble. Engrave the party instead: the company name and the year, the family's last name, or an inside joke the whole group will get. On the Decision Maker you can even change the answers to the questions your office can never settle. Our personalization page explains how engraving works.
Most white elephant parties land in December. Engraved pieces are made after you order, so they have an earlier order-by date than everything else, and our holiday shipping cutoff page lists both.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good white elephant gift?
Something the room understands the moment the paper comes off, that people can try on the spot, and that anyone would be happy to take home. For us that usually means a small wooden game or puzzle, like the Decision Maker, Penny Drop Mini or 10 Penny Puzzle, inside the group's price limit.
What are good white elephant gifts under $25?
From this list: the Idiot Stick is under $10; the Double Trouble String Puzzle, 10 Penny Puzzle, Penny Drop Mini and Dime Dilemma are under $15; and Peg Jump 6 is under $20. Prices were checked in October 2026 and can change. Our white elephant collection has more.
Is a puzzle a good white elephant gift?
A quick one is. The best swap puzzles can be tried in a few minutes in a noisy room, like the 10 Penny Puzzle or the Double Trouble String Puzzle. Save the long, hard puzzles for the serious puzzler on your list; our guide to choosing puzzle difficulty explains the levels.
How many times can a white elephant gift be stolen?
That is a house rule, so agree on it before the first gift is opened. Most groups cap it at two or three steals, and after that the gift is frozen with whoever is holding it.
Should I engrave a white elephant gift?
You can, but skip the person's name, since you do not know who will end up with it. Engrave the party instead, like the company name and the year, or an inside joke the whole group will get. Engraved pieces are made after you order, so check the order-by date on our holiday shipping cutoff page.
