Stocking Stuffers for Men: 10 Wooden Puzzles and Magic Tricks He'll Pass Around

7 Pennies Puzzle by Creative Crafthouse on a wooden table: a square cherry-finished board with its goal and rules engraved in the center and seven pennies resting on its eight circles.

Phil Janelle |

The best stocking stuffer for a man is something small he can start working on at the table on Christmas morning and then hand to whoever is sitting next to him. Wooden coin puzzles and math magic tricks are made for that. Creative Crafthouse is a family workshop in Hudson, Florida that has made wooden puzzles and games since 2003, and these are the ten small ones we would put in a man's stocking this year, nine of them under $20.

Every pick in this guide except the Idiot Stick is made in our Hudson workshop, and every order ships from there. Prices are today's and can change.

What makes a good stocking stuffer for a man

First, it has to fit. A stocking is not deep, and anything much bigger than a paperback ends up under the tree instead. The coin puzzles below are small, flat boards; the 10 Penny Puzzle, for one, is 3.75 by 4 inches.

It should also get going fast, because Christmas morning is busy. The ones that work best explain themselves in a sentence. The rules of the 7 Pennies Puzzle are engraved right on the board, and every coin puzzle here comes with its own pennies (or, for the Dime Dilemma, its dime), so there is nothing to hunt for.

The ones that go over best get passed around. Once he solves a coin puzzle, the next person wants a turn, and if he learns one of the magic tricks below ahead of time, he has something to do for the family after breakfast that nobody else can figure out. That is why half of this list is magic tricks and illusions.

Coin puzzles that fit in a stocking

All four come with their coins. The 10 Penny Puzzle is the easiest of them, and the other three are a step up.

10 Penny Puzzle by Creative Crafthouse: a light wooden frame engraved Ten Penny Puzzle, nine pennies in the opening and the tenth in a round slot below.
Easiest one to start with
Ten pennies come with it, and all ten have to lie flat in the opening. Line them up in rows and the last one will not fit, so the answer is a staggered arrangement that is harder to spot than it sounds. Dave Janelle, who founded Creative Crafthouse, turned that bit of circle-packing math into this puzzle, and at 3.75 by 4 inches it slides into any stocking. It is rated Easy, which makes it a good first puzzle for the man who says he is not a puzzle person.

7 Pennies Puzzle by Creative Crafthouse: a square cherry-finished board with eight round pockets joined by engraved lines, the rules engraved in the center and pennies in some pockets.
Best with the rules right on the board
The board has eight circles joined by straight lines, and the goal is to get seven pennies onto it. Each penny has to start on an empty circle and slide along a line into another empty one, where it stays, so the order you place them in is the whole puzzle. The rules are engraved on the cherry-finished board and seven real U.S. pennies come with it. The U.S. Mint struck its last circulating penny on November 12, 2025, so if there is a jar of them at your house, our post on what to do with old pennies has more ideas.
Under $15 · Intermediate
Penny Packer 16 by Creative Crafthouse: a wooden board engraved Place 16 pennies inside quadrant, with pennies packed into its quarter-circle opening and one more in a round slot.
Best for the man who likes a tight fit
Sixteen pennies come with it, and he has to fit all 16 inside the quarter-circle opening cut into the board. They pack so tightly that only one arrangement works, and a solution sheet comes with it for the day he wants to check. We make it in our Hudson workshop.
Under $20 · Intermediate
Dime Dilemma by Creative Crafthouse: a round wooden board with numbered circular wooden pieces and a real dime inside its large circular opening.
Best for the competitive one
Ten laser-cut wooden pieces and a real dime all have to fit inside the big circle on the board at the same time. Dave Janelle designed it in 2020, it is harder than the 10 Penny Puzzle, and our own challenge for it is five minutes. The dime and the one solution both come with it, so he can set a timer and hand it around the room.

Magic tricks he can learn before Christmas

A magic trick is the one stocking stuffer he gets to use on everyone else. He learns it from the instructions, practices a little, and saves it for when the family is all in one room. We will not give away how any of them work here. Our magic tricks collection has the rest of the tricks we make.

Swords of Truth by Creative Crafthouse: eight narrow wooden swords marked with numbers, fanned out on a metal keychain ring.
Best for his keys
Eight wooden swords hang on a metal keychain ring, each one marked with numbers. Someone picks a number from any sword and answers a few simple questions, and he tells them the number they picked. It takes some practice with the instruction sheet before it looks easy, and once it does, it can live on his keys and come out whenever the family is together. We make it in our Hudson workshop.
Under $30
Mind Reader Cards by Creative Crafthouse: six square wooden cards laser-engraved with grids of numbers, beside an engraved instruction card.
Best for after dinner
Six alder cards, each 2 1/8 inches square, carry the numbers 1 through 60. A friend thinks of a number, looks through the cards and turns some of them over, and within seconds he names the number they picked. The instructions are laser-engraved on a card of their own, so they will not get lost in the wrapping paper. This set comes without a wooden case, which makes it an easy fit for a stocking.
Under $20
Wizard Magic Math Cards by Creative Crafthouse: six light wooden cards laid in two rows, each engraved with a number inside a square, triangle, heart or circle.
Best for the numbers guy
Six wooden cards with a number on each side. Someone lays them out any way they like and adds up the numbers facing up, and he tells them the total without seeing a single number. If he likes that one, the Brainiac 9 and Amazing Insight Alpha are two more of our math magic sets in the same price range, one built on numbers and one on the letters A to Z.
Under $20
Which Is Larger by Creative Crafthouse: three curved wooden pieces engraved with the question Which is larger and small animal drawings.
Quickest one to show
Three wooden pieces, a quarter inch thick, with one question engraved on them: which is larger? Ask someone to pick, swap the pieces around, and ask again. It takes ten seconds to show, and then he can pass it down the table. We make it in our Hudson workshop.
Under $20
Idiot Stick by Creative Crafthouse: a round wooden stick standing beside a wooden peg with a rounded knob.
Best under $10
A wooden stick and a peg. He shows how the peg catches inside the stick, hands it over, and watches everyone else try to make it do the same thing. It is the least expensive pick on this list and a good one for a laugh at the bottom of the stocking.

One game for the whole room

Penny Drop Mini by Creative Crafthouse: a narrow wooden game box engraved Penny Drop Mini, with numbered slots along the top and a die resting on top.
Best for the whole family
Dave Janelle invented Penny Drop in 2015, and the Mini is its smallest size. Everyone starts with 12 pennies and takes turns rolling the die. Roll a 1 to 5 and you put a penny in that slot if it is empty, but if a penny is already there you pick up every penny on the board and your turn is over. A 6 drops a penny into the box and you roll again. The first player out of pennies wins. You bring the pennies, so tuck a roll of them into the stocking too, and the official Penny Drop rules walk through a full game. You can also print the one-page rules and a score sheet from our Penny Drop rules and score sheets page. The Travel edition is a size up.

Make it personal, and get it there by Christmas

Every pick in this guide can be laser-engraved with his name or a short message, up to 45 characters, for $4 more. If you want to say a little more, add our Wood Message Card, a 4 by 3 inch birch card engraved with your note, which ships in the box with the gift. More on how engraving works is on our personalization page.

We engrave pieces after you order, so engraved gifts have an earlier Christmas order-by date than everything else. Our holiday shipping cutoff page lists this year's dates.

Frequently asked questions

What are good stocking stuffers for men?

Small things he can use on Christmas morning and then pass to the next person. A coin puzzle like the 10 Penny Puzzle or the 7 Pennies Puzzle, a magic trick like the Mind Reader Cards or Swords of Truth, or the Penny Drop Mini for a game with the whole family. Our puzzle and game stocking stuffers collection has more.

What do you get a man who has everything for his stocking?

Something to figure out rather than one more thing to keep in a drawer. The Dime Dilemma and the Penny Packer 16 will hold him longer than the 10 Penny Puzzle, and Swords of Truth gives him a trick to learn. Engraving his name on it, up to 45 characters, makes it one nobody else has.

Are the pennies included?

Yes, for the coin puzzles. The 10 Penny Puzzle comes with 10 pennies, the 7 Pennies Puzzle with seven real U.S. pennies, and the Penny Packer 16 with 16, and the Dime Dilemma comes with its dime. Penny Drop is the exception: each player needs 12 pennies of their own.

Will you give away how the magic tricks work?

No, we keep the secrets off this page so nobody can look them up before Christmas. Swords of Truth comes with an instruction sheet, and the Mind Reader Cards have their instructions engraved on a card of their own.

What if he does not like puzzles?

Give him something he performs or plays instead. A magic trick puts him on the other side of the puzzle, and the Penny Drop Mini is a quick dice game the whole family can play with a pocketful of pennies.

Can it be engraved, and when should I order for Christmas?

Yes. Every pick here can be laser-engraved with a name or a short message, up to 45 characters, for $4 more. Engraved pieces are made after you order, so they have an earlier order-by date, and our holiday shipping cutoff page lists this year's dates.
