For a screen-free gift, picture where it will be used: a puzzle beside a notebook on the desk, a board between two chairs, or Penny Drop after dinner. Choose the activity the recipient wants to spend time on. These five wooden gifts need no screen for their basic activity, and the guide explains what to set out for the first use.

Choose the setting before the object
A table with other people
Penny Drop is a group dice game. Nine Men's Morris is for two players.
A desk and a spare few minutes
A packing or ring puzzle can stay in progress. Start it without committing to a finishing time.
A message to someone else
Enigma II lets the recipient encode something for a friend to read.
Make the first use easy to start
Think about the place as well as the person. A packing puzzle can be tried alone on a clear desk; a two-player board needs a seat for someone else. If you are giving the latter, offering an evening to learn it together helps turn the object into a plan.
If you are giving a game, read the rules and have the necessary pieces ready. If you are giving a fixed puzzle, let the recipient choose whether to solve alone or share it. Avoid turning the gift into a timed test.
Keep the supplies together with the gift. A separate pouch of pennies for a game or paper for a coded note saves a search through drawers when the recipient is ready to try it.

Family table
Original Penny Drop
Dave Janelle invented Penny Drop in 2015 around a roll-again-or-pass decision: an occupied numbered slot sends the board pennies back to the player, while a safe roll leaves a choice to continue. Original Penny Drop is a race to empty your pennies. Creative Crafthouse recommends Original Penny Drop for 2 to 10 players; the printed Penny Drop rules allow two or more players without a maximum.
For a gathering, the game can be the thing people do together. Set out the pennies and die before you offer to teach it.
Before giving: Original Penny Drop includes a board and storage box, a die and printed rules; players supply 12 pennies each.
Original Penny Drop starts at $29.95; product price checked October 21, 2026.

Two-player strategy
Nine Men's Morris
Nine Men's Morris is a two-player strategy game with twenty-four board points and nine pieces per player. In Nine Men's Morris, players first place pieces, then move along the lines; forming a mill, a row of three, allows removal of an opposing piece under the rules.
This is a choice for two people who want decisions that affect each other's next move. Leave the rules with the board for the first games.
Before giving: Nine Men's Morris includes the board, eighteen playing pieces and cover. The product page has the rules to print before giving.
Nine Men's Morris starts at $31.75; product price checked October 21, 2026.

Shape fitting
Cracked Egg
Cracked Egg is Stewart Coffin's Design #260, made by Creative Crafthouse with his permission. Cracked Egg has six pieces to fit into an egg-shaped opening, with curved and irregular edges giving the solver a fitting problem without a printed image. Start by comparing that shape task with the puzzles the recipient already enjoys.
Try an arrangement, notice why it fails, and set it aside when you want to stop. Leave the six pieces together when you pause, so you can return to the arrangement.
Before giving: Cracked Egg includes an instruction and solution sheet.
Cracked Egg starts at $21.95; product price checked October 21, 2026.

Math and constraints
Safecracker 50
Dave Janelle designed Safecracker 50 with five movable rings, sixteen positions per ring and one solution in which all sixteen columns total 50. Safecracker 50 has 1,048,576 possible alignments, so one promising column still leaves fifteen others to check.
A paper note can help track a promising set of ring positions if you want to resume later. The puzzle's visible numbers give the session a specific task.
Before giving: Safecracker 50 includes a printed solution sheet.
Safecracker 50 starts at $31.75; product price checked October 21, 2026.

Codes and shared messages
Enigma II
Enigma II uses three alphabet gears to encode and decode messages, giving the owner a tool for creating a puzzle for someone else. Choose Enigma II when sending a coded note is as appealing as solving one.
The Enigma series was designed and built by Dave Janelle and Bob Nolet. Try the supplied examples first, then encode something meant for a real person: an invitation to your next game, perhaps. One Enigma II Small can do both jobs when you share it. To exchange messages from separate places, each person needs their own Enigma II Small, with the same gear order and keyword. Include that setup with your note.
Before giving: Enigma II includes three messages to decode, an instruction sheet and worksheets.
Enigma II starts at $36.95; product price checked October 21, 2026.
Set up the first session
- For Penny Drop, count 12 pennies for each player. For the other selections, check the exact contents listed on the product page.
- Pick a clear surface with room for the pieces. Keep the supplied instructions nearby; print the Nine Men's Morris rules from its product page before giving. For Penny Drop, you can print the one-page rules and a score sheet from our Penny Drop rules and score sheets page.
- Give the activity time without requiring completion. A fixed puzzle can be set down and resumed.
- When the game ends or a puzzle is put away, check the pieces back into its storage. A missing piece changes what can be done next time.

Questions before you choose
Which gift is best for someone who prefers company?
Choose a game and a likely group. Penny Drop suits shared dice play; Nine Men's Morris is a two-player strategy option.
Which can be used alone?
Cracked Egg and Safecracker 50 are solo challenges. Enigma II can be used alone for practice, though exchanging a message gives it a shared purpose.
What can I leave ready on a desk?
Cracked Egg offers a six-piece shape task, and Safecracker 50 offers numbered rings to investigate. Leave the pieces together and the instructions within reach.
Which offers a new activity after a first solve?
Penny Drop changes through play, and Enigma II can encode new messages. Cracked Egg and Safecracker 50 retain their fixed underlying solutions.
