Christmas Gifts for Kids Who Like Puzzles: 9 Wooden Picks by Age, 6 to 12

Close-up of the Dinosaur Dilemma wooden puzzle by Creative Crafthouse: dinosaur pieces in several wood tones, including a long-necked sauropod and a T. rex, above the frame's engraved edge.

Phil Janelle |

The best Christmas gift for a kid who likes puzzles is one they can beat on Christmas morning and still want to play with in January. For ages 6 to 8, start with a frame puzzle they can rebuild, like the Shutter Puzzle. For 8 to 10, give a packing puzzle, like Hexagon 10 with its twenty solutions, or Dinosaur Dilemma for the dinosaur kid. For 11 and 12, a real math challenge like Safecracker 40. And for the whole family, a game a kid can win against the grown-ups, like Penny Drop Mini.

We are Creative Crafthouse, a family workshop in Hudson, Florida, making wooden puzzles and games since 2003. Everything below is something we make, most of it in our Hudson workshop. Prices were checked on October 20, 2026.

How to pick a puzzle a kid will actually finish

The easy way to miss with a puzzle gift is to pick one that is too hard for Christmas morning. We would rather see a kid solve the first one before lunch and ask what else we make, so for the big day we lean one step easier than you might think. The harder puzzle can wait for a birthday.

It also helps when a kid can see what done looks like. The Shutter Puzzle is a picture they already know, a camera shutter, and Hexagon 10 arrives already solved, so they see the finished shape before they take it apart. And if you want the gift to last past winter break, look for more than one answer: Hexagon 10 has twenty.

Hexagon 10, Cash Out and our Secret Stash box all come with a solution sheet. Keep it in your pocket and give hints one at a time when the fun starts to fade. Our ages are a guide, and you know your kid best: a 9 year old who loves arithmetic may be ready for Safecracker 40, and a 12 year old who has never tried a wooden puzzle will have a great time with Hexagon 10.

First puzzles for ages 6 to 8

At this age the best puzzle is one with a picture to rebuild and few enough pieces that a kid can hold the whole problem in their head. The Shutter Puzzle is our first pick for a six year old.

Shutter Puzzle by Creative Crafthouse, solved: seven wooden pieces in different wood tones forming a camera-shutter pattern inside a hexagon-shaped frame engraved Shutter Puzzle.
First real puzzle, ages 6 and up
Seven wooden pieces rebuild the spiral of a camera shutter inside a hexagon frame. Sherzod Khaydarbekov of Tashkent, Uzbekistan designed it, and we make it with his permission. We rate it level 2 of 5 and recommend it for ages 6 and up, so a first grader can finish it on Christmas morning and feel like a genius. We cut each Shutter Puzzle from mixed hardwoods in our Hudson, Florida workshop, so no two look quite alike.

Packing puzzles for ages 8 to 10

Around eight, kids start to enjoy a puzzle that fights back a little. Packing puzzles are perfect here: every piece has to go back in the frame, and the trick is the order and the turn. Hexagon 10 even arrives solved, so nobody is lost before they begin.

Dinosaur Dilemma by Creative Crafthouse: eight wooden dinosaur pieces in several wood tones fitted into a square frame engraved Dinosaur Dilemma, resting on its box.
For the dinosaur kid, ages 8 and up
Eight wooden dinosaurs come out of a 7.5 inch square frame, and the job is getting all of them back in. It looks like a simple picture puzzle until a kid tips it out and tries to put it back. It is made for ages 8 and up, and we can engrave a name on it.
$36.95
A hand placing a piece into the Hexagon 10 wooden tray by Creative Crafthouse, its engraved pieces forming a pattern of small hexagons.
Twenty solutions to find, ages 8 and up
Dave Janelle designed Hexagon 10: ten pieces, each a different cluster of small hexagons, packed into a hexagon frame. It arrives solved, so a kid sees the goal, takes it apart and rebuilds it. That first solve is rated Easy, and then there are nineteen more solutions to hunt for, three of them on the included sheet. The pieces are laser cut and engraved from quarter-inch alder.
$27.49

A real stretch for tweens, 11 and 12

By the end of elementary school, some kids are bored by anything labeled for kids. For them, give a puzzle we sell to adults and tell them so. Safecracker 40 is pure arithmetic and patience, and solving it earns real bragging rights at the dinner table.

Safecracker 40 by Creative Crafthouse resting in an open hand: stacked wooden rings of engraved numbers around a center disk marked SafeCracker Puzzle 40.
The stretch pick for an 11 or 12 year old
Turn the rings until all sixteen columns add up to 40 at the same time. We sell it as an Intermediate puzzle for teens and adults, and we mean that, so save it for the 11 or 12 year old who does math for fun and is bored by easy toys. It fits in a palm at 4.4 inches across, and is made of maple with a cherry finish.

A gift hidden inside a puzzle

For a lot of kids, the most exciting envelope under the tree holds money or a gift card. A puzzle box makes that envelope an event: they have to solve the box to get the gift. These two are easy enough that nobody ends up in tears. If you want a cherry box with a little more mystery, the Secret Stash, designed by Bob Nolet, is rated Easy and most people open it in a couple of minutes once they spot the cue. We compare every money box we make in our gift card puzzle box guide.

Top of the Snowflake Box by Creative Crafthouse: a blue-stained maple lid laser-engraved with a large, pale snowflake.
Hide the gift card inside
Put the gift card, or the cash from Grandma, inside, and the box becomes the second present. There are no buttons or latches; the way in is a secret that most people find in a few minutes. We make the Snowflake Box in our Hudson, Florida workshop from blue-stained maple, with five different laser-engraved snowflakes, and it is a 4 inch cube.
$59.95
A hand holding the Cash Out puzzle box by Creative Crafthouse, a folded bill visible through its clear front window.
Money box on a smaller budget
The kid can see the money through a clear acrylic window and has to solve the box to get it out, which is the best kind of torture on Christmas morning. It is an approachable solve, usually a few moves, and the instructions and solution sheet come in the box for the grown-up. Rubberwood, 4.6 by 3.6 by 1 inches. Designed and made by Creative Crafthouse.

Games a kid can win against the grown-ups

The family games kids ask for again are the ones where they actually win. In both of these the die does a lot of the deciding, so an eight year old and a grandparent play on equal terms. If you would rather give the full-size Penny Drop, the Original Penny Drop has a sliding cherry lid, and our Penny Drop rules page explains every move. You can also print the one-page rules and a score sheet from our Penny Drop rules and score sheets page.

Horse Race Game by Creative Crafthouse: an engraved wooden board full of peg holes on top of its box, with wooden peg horses and a die beside it.
Two players, a kid can beat anyone
Roll the die and move your peg horse down the track, unless it lands on a hole with no bottom and drops into the box. Because the die does the deciding, a grandchild and a grandparent start on equal footing. We recommend it for ages 8 and up; it comes with twelve peg horses, a handmade die and a rules sheet.
$26.49
Penny Drop Mini by Creative Crafthouse: a small wooden game box engraved Penny Drop Mini, with numbered slots along the lid and a die resting on top.
Family game that fits a stocking
Our founder Dave Janelle invented Penny Drop in 2015, and this is the smallest one we make: 5.0 by 1.8 by 1.5 inches, for 2 to 10 players. You roll, place a penny in the matching slot, and try to run out of pennies first. It is easy to learn in one round, and the luck of the die means kids win plenty. Players supply 12 pennies each, and every Penny Drop Mini is handmade in our Hudson, Florida workshop.

A stocking stuffer to pass around

Every stocking needs one small thing that leaves the stocking and goes around the room. String puzzles are perfect for this, because everyone is sure they can do it until they try.

Double Trouble string puzzle by Creative Crafthouse: two flat wooden pieces looped together with red cord and wooden balls.
Stocking stuffer, the classic string puzzle
Two wooden pieces tied together with cord: can you separate them? It is quite easy once you know what to do, but few find it quickly, which makes it the one the whole family passes around after the presents. Quarter-inch hardwood, and at $10.95 the cheapest thing on this list.
$10.95

Add their name, and order in time

We can laser engrave a name or short message of up to 45 characters on most of these for $4, which turns a puzzle into the one that is theirs. See examples on our laser engraving page. For delivery in the US by Christmas, order by Wednesday, December 16, or by Tuesday, December 15 if anything is engraved, since we make personalized pieces after you order. Every date is on our holiday shipping cutoff page.

Questions parents and grandparents ask us

What is a good puzzle for a 6 year old?

Choose a frame puzzle with a picture to rebuild and only a few pieces. The Shutter Puzzle is our pick: seven wooden pieces, rated level 2 of 5, recommended for ages 6 and up.

What should I get a kid who loves puzzles?

For a kid of 8 to 10 who already likes puzzles, Hexagon 10 is a safe bet, because the first solve is Easy and the other nineteen solutions keep going. If they finish everything fast and love math, go up to Safecracker 40.

Are wooden puzzles good for kids?

Yes, for kids who like hands-on play. A well-made wooden puzzle is durable and works without batteries or a screen, so it can be handed down to the next sibling. On Hexagon 10 and Safecracker 40 the numbers and markings are laser engraved into the wood, so they will not wear off with play.

What is the best puzzle for a 12 year old?

For a 12 year old who likes math, Safecracker 40: sixteen columns that all have to total 40 at once, rated Intermediate and sold for teens and adults. For a 12 year old who would rather fit shapes, Hexagon 10 and its twenty solutions. For one who likes a mystery, a puzzle box like the Secret Stash; browse all of our wooden puzzle boxes.

What if my kid cannot solve it?

Several of our puzzles, including Hexagon 10, Cash Out and the Secret Stash, come with an instruction and solution sheet. Keep it for yourself and give hints one step at a time.

What is a good family game to give a kid for Christmas?

Pick a game where luck evens out the ages. Penny Drop Mini plays 2 to 10 people with one die and a pile of pennies, and the Horse Race Game is a two-player race where a lead can vanish on the next roll. For more family games, see our guide to wooden games for Christmas.
