Description

Find with Focus is a hands-on visual scanning activity designed to encourage attention, observation, and visual search through engaging, tactile play. The activity includes 80 engraved wooden pieces in two sizes that can be scattered across the included 8.5" x 11" Visual Scanning Tray. The Large Wooden Pieces and Small Wooden Pieces allow the activity to be easily adapted from simple visual searches to more advanced scanning and attention challenges.

Unlike fixed search activities, every session can be different. Rearranging the pieces creates new visual layouts, while the person guiding the activity controls the arrangement of the pieces and the instructions, making the activity suitable for a wide range of ability levels.

Participants can search for matching pieces, identify specific objects, sort items into groups, count selected pieces, or follow increasingly complex directions. The tactile wooden pieces encourage reaching, grasping, and manipulating objects throughout the activity, creating an engaging hands-on experience that can be adapted for a wide variety of visual scanning and attention tasks.

Adjustable Difficulty

The included Instruction Guide provides activity ideas ranging from beginner to advanced, and the challenge can be adjusted by:

Using only the Large Wooden Pieces for simpler visual searches.
Mixing Large Wooden Pieces and Small Wooden Pieces for increased complexity.
Following one-step or multi-step verbal directions.
Creating matching, sorting, counting, or memory activities.
Increasing the number of target pieces or distractors.

What is Find with Focus?

It is a visual scanning activity for adults. 80 engraved wooden pieces in two sizes scatter across an engraved wooden tray, and because the pieces are rearrangeable the layout can be different every session rather than fixed. A printed search sheet has the same answer in the same place the second time through. This does not.

How do you make it easier or harder?

The person guiding the activity sets the level, not the product. Use only the large pieces, or mix in the small ones. Add target pieces or distractors. Move from one-step to multi-step verbal directions. The Instruction Guide runs from beginner to advanced, so you are not inventing the progression yourself.

Find with Focus was designed by Pete Janelle, who runs day-to-day operations in our Hudson, Florida workshop, and it is cut and engraved there. Orders ship from our Florida shop. It is one of the Purpose-Built Activities in our Cognitive Challenge Series.

How is this different from the other activities in the series?

Find with Focus is the visual search one: the task is looking and finding. Our Everyday Sequencing set is about putting the steps of a daily routine in order, and the Talking Tree and WordWeaver are built for describing and for building sentences. Pick this one when the goal is scanning and attention.
