Description

Cruiser is a four-piece wooden brain teaser, and a good gift for a grandchild, a teenager or a dad who already likes puzzles. It is Stewart Coffin's design #167, and we make it with his permission at Creative Crafthouse, our family workshop in Hudson, Florida. The goal is to fit two trapezoids and two triangles into a small rectangular tray, and with only four pieces it looks like it should take a minute or two.

Stewart Coffin is one of the most respected names in mechanical puzzle design and the author of the book Geometric Puzzle Design. In AP-ART, the compendium where he numbers and describes his own designs, he calls the Cruiser "a top favorite among my flat tray puzzles because of its deceptive simplicity." He named it for the trips where he brought one along to entertain his travel companions. He writes that seldom could any of them solve it, even after he started dropping hints.

The four pieces are 1/4 inch thick laser cut wood, a mix of maple finished and cherry finished pieces. The tray has a floorboard bottom with a maple finished top and frame. The whole puzzle measures 5.5 x 3.3 x 0.5 inches, so it sits on a desk or a coffee table without taking over. It comes with a wood cover and a printed instruction and solution sheet, and it ships unsolved. If the person you give it to gets stuck, the answer is in the box.

We rate it intermediate, and we recommend it for ages 14 and up. One customer reviewed it as "Super challenging."

Nice work. Clean and tight.

As the other reviews said, the puzzle is more beautiful in person than I expected. I have not opened it yet (it is a gift, otherwise I would have!) but I know it will be a hit. It is gorgeous and the customer service support from the shop owners was amazing, even during the busy holiday season! I will definitely be ordering more in the future.
