Family table
Original Penny Drop
Dave Janelle invented Penny Drop in 2015 around a roll-again-or-pass decision: an occupied numbered slot sends the board pennies back to the player, while a safe roll leaves a choice to continue. Original Penny Drop is a race to empty your pennies. Creative Crafthouse recommends Original Penny Drop for 2 to 10 players; the printed Penny Drop rules allow two or more players without a maximum.
If you want a game to open and play that morning, count out the pennies before wrapping. Four players need 48. Put them in a separate pouch with the game, then offer to teach the first round while everyone is still at the table. You can also print the one-page rules and a score sheet from our Penny Drop rules and score sheets page.
Before giving: Original Penny Drop includes a board and storage box, a die and printed rules; players supply 12 pennies each.
Original Penny Drop starts at $29.95; price checked October 14, 2026.

Variety of shape challenges
Tangram Challenge Plus
Tangram Challenge Plus combines Heart Tangram, Egg Tangram, the classic seven-piece tangram and One Hour Challenge in four board compartments. Choose Tangram Challenge Plus for someone who enjoys moving between different shape problems.
The four compartments let them work on one outline, then move to another when curiosity takes over.
Before giving: Tangram Challenge Plus offers four separate challenges; One Hour Challenge is a puzzle name, not a promised finishing time.
Rated Intermediate. Tangram Challenge Plus starts at $36.50; price checked October 14, 2026.

Visible gift reveal
Cash Out
Cash Out combines rubberwood and acrylic, with a clear window that shows the cash or gift card behind the opening mechanism. Watching someone investigate while the gift stays in view is part of the appeal.
Read the opening instructions privately and load the box before giving it, so you know how it opens if they ask for a hint.
Before giving: Cash Out includes a play $20 bill, instructions and a solution sheet. Replace the play bill with your real gift before wrapping.
Rated Intermediate. Cash Out starts at $20.95; price checked October 14, 2026.

Shape fitting
Cracked Egg
Cracked Egg has six pieces to fit into an egg-shaped opening, with curved and irregular edges giving the solver a fitting problem without a printed image. Stewart Coffin designed it, and Creative Crafthouse makes it with his permission.
A recipient used to jigsaws can start by examining the curves and trying a fit; the egg outline gives them a clear goal without a picture to copy.
Before giving: Cracked Egg includes an instruction and solution sheet.
Rated Hard. Cracked Egg starts at $21.95; price checked October 14, 2026.

Math and constraints
Safecracker 50
Dave Janelle designed Safecracker 50 with five movable rings, sixteen positions per ring and one solution in which all sixteen columns total 50. Safecracker 50 has 1,048,576 possible alignments, so one promising column still leaves fifteen others to check.
Choose it for someone who enjoys checking an idea against several constraints. A person who dislikes arithmetic may prefer a shape puzzle even if the difficulty label is similar.
Before giving: Safecracker 50 includes an instruction and solution sheet.
Rated Hard. Safecracker 50 starts at $31.75; price checked October 14, 2026.

Experienced shape solver
Martin's Menace
Martin's Menace puts just four irregular pieces in a frame and belongs to The Impossible Puzzle Series. It is a Stewart Coffin design, made with his permission. Choose Martin's Menace for a solver who likes inspecting how a few shapes can resist a simple-looking goal.
Mention the missing solution sheet before choosing it for a gift exchange where you may not know the recipient's patience.
Before giving: Martin's Menace includes instructions, but no solution sheet.
Rated Impossible. Martin's Menace starts at $15.75; price checked October 14, 2026.

Experienced packing solver
Calibron 12
Theodore Edison released Calibron 12 in 1933; it asks the solver to arrange twelve rectangular pieces into a single square without a picture to reconstruct. Calibron 12 belongs to The Impossible Puzzle Series; an arrangement can look nearly finished while leaving a gap the last piece cannot fill.
Keep the solution available for help, rather than putting the answer on top of the pieces.
Before giving: Calibron 12 includes an instruction and solution sheet.
Rated Impossible. Calibron 12 starts at $38.95; price checked October 14, 2026.
Make the gift ready for its first use
- Check the exact edition and its contents, especially if you are relying on a photograph with props.
- Add the pennies for Penny Drop, or the real card or cash for Cash Out.
- Read a puzzle box's loading instructions before wrapping and keep its answer separate until wanted.
- For Christmas morning in the US, order by Wednesday, December 16, or by Tuesday, December 15 for an engraved piece, because we engrave after you order. Our holiday shipping cutoff page shows how those dates are counted; ordering ahead of them is safer.
Questions before you choose
What is a good wooden puzzle to give for Christmas?
Pick by what the recipient enjoys. For a family that plays together, Original Penny Drop. For a first step past jigsaws, Tangram Challenge Plus (Intermediate). For a harder shape-fitting challenge, Cracked Egg (Hard). For someone who likes numbers, Safecracker 50. For a serious solver, Martin's Menace or Calibron 12. To give cash or a gift card, Cash Out.
Which gift should I choose when I do not know their experience?
Begin with how they like to spend time. A family game and a solo packing puzzle serve different purposes. If you cannot establish that they enjoy difficult puzzles, avoid the choices from The Impossible Puzzle Series.
Do all seven include a solution?
Martin's Menace has instructions but no solution sheet. Original Penny Drop includes printed rules. Check each selected puzzle's included list when deciding how you want to offer help.
Can I add engraving?
Yes. All seven can be laser-engraved with a name, date or short message of up to 45 characters for $4 more; add it and type your text on each product page. Engraved items cannot be returned, so check the spelling before you order. Our personalization page explains how it works.
Is the pictured money included?
Cash Out includes a play $20 bill; replace the play bill with your own cash or gift card before giving.
