Frequently Asked Questions

What can I actually hide in one of these? Will a gift card / cash / ring / small heirloom fit?

Yes to all of those. The boxes in this collection are sized to hide a folded standard gift card, folded paper bills, a folded check, a small ring or pair of earrings, a USB drive, a folded handwritten note, a small key, or a small heirloom. Interior dimensions vary by box, with the most common interior cavity in the 3 to 4 inch range. A few examples from this collection: the Secret Stash Cherry at 4 x 4 x 4 inches has a felt-lined interior that fits a standard plastic gift card flat, plus folded bills or a small piece of jewelry on top of it. The Stargazer XL has a roughly 7.5 by 5.5 by 3.75 inch interior chamber, built for bigger contents like a folded watch, a stack of cash, or a small bundle of papers. The Dragon Hurricane at 5.5 x 4.4 x 3.2 inches fits gift cards, folded cash, and small jewelry. If you have a specific recipient and a specific item in mind, the product page for each box lists the interior dimensions; email puzzles@creativecrafthouse.com if you want a recommendation for a piece you have on your desk and are not sure which box it will fit.

How do they open? Sliding panels, magnets, sequence locks, hidden drawers, or something else?

The boxes in this collection use four broad mechanism families. Sliding lid or sliding panel (easy, surprise-style). The Secret Stash Cherry is a sliding lid box: the lid moves once you find the cue, and a felt-lined cavity is underneath. Easy on purpose. Multi-step lock or sequence opening (medium difficulty, Bob Nolet's design language). The Secret Lock Box II series (Walnut, Mahogany, Cherry) and the Mandala Secret Lock open after a small sequence of moves that have to happen in the right order. Most recipients work it out in a few minutes once they spot the first move. Hurricane spin box (medium-easy, satisfying mechanical motion). The Dragon Hurricane, Pirate Ship Hurricane, Ancient Egypt Hurricane, City Circuit Board Hurricane, Colorful Belle, and the Hurricane Puzzle Box base all share the rotational spin mechanism that gives the family its name. Spin to align, lift to open. Magnetic lock with secret drawer (medium, hidden second layer). The Butterfly Wood Puzzle Box uses a magnetic catch that releases a secret drawer underneath the visible compartment, so even after the recipient opens the box they may not realize there is a second hidden space. The product page for each box describes its specific mechanism. None of the boxes in this collection require batteries, electronics, or apps. The mechanisms are all wood, magnets, or simple mechanical motion that hold up to handling and gifting.

Who designs these? Is Bob Nolet the only designer here?

Bob Nolet is the designer behind the Secret Stash Cherry and the Secret Lock Box II family (Walnut, Mahogany, Cherry). Bob is one of our designers and a former Creative Crafthouse team member, and his pieces are credited to him by name on the product page. The rest of the collection is made by the Creative Crafthouse workshop team, with a few boxes building on designs from puzzle makers we work with. The Hurricane Puzzle Box series (Dragon, Pirate Ship, Ancient Egypt, City Circuit, base/blank, Colorful Belle) is our in-house spin-box family. The Stargazer XL, the Firebird, and the Butterfly Magnetic are team designs from our workshop in Hudson, Florida. The Mandala Secret Lock variants use our Secret Lock Box sliding-key mechanism with added mandala laser artwork, and the original lock design is credited to Erhan Cubukcuoglu of Turkey. The Mag Lock Puzzle Box was designed by Robert Justiana, a former Creative Crafthouse CNC lead. We are a multi-person family workshop, not a one-person operation, and each piece carries the design language of the person on the bench when it was built.

Where are these made? Is every box in this collection made in Hudson, Florida?

Most of them are. Creative Crafthouse is a family workshop in Hudson, Florida, and most of the boxes in this collection are designed and made here. A small number of boxes in this collection are Creative Crafthouse products made at a different shop, not at the Hudson workshop. The two we want to be specific about: the Cash Out is one of those, and the Secret Lock Box I Premium is the other. Both are still our designs and still ship from our Florida workshop within one business day. We mention this so you can buy with the full picture. The rest of the boxes in this collection (the Secret Stash, the Hurricane series, the Stargazer, the Firebird, the Butterfly Magnetic, the Mandala variants, the Secret Lock Box II family in Walnut, Mahogany, and Cherry) are handcrafted at our Hudson, Florida workshop. Every box in the collection ships from our Florida workshop. If you want to know where a specific box was made before you order, email puzzles@creativecrafthouse.com and we will tell you straight.

What wood are they made from? Will they survive shipping and gifting?

Solid hardwood and hand-finished wood, varying by piece. Common species across the collection: American cherry (Secret Stash Cherry, Secret Lock Box II Cherry), maple (the Hurricane series, the Firebird red-stained maple, the Blue Stained Maple Snowflake edition), walnut (Secret Lock Box II Walnut), mahogany (Secret Lock Box II Mahogany), eucalyptus (IQ Puzzle Box), and rubberwood with an acrylic clear panel (Cash Out). Each box is laser-cut, hand-assembled, and finished with a food-safe oil or a clear protective finish appropriate to the wood. They are real wood objects designed to be used, handled, and gifted, not display-only ornaments. They ship in protective packaging, hold up to typical shipping handling, and will outlast the gift inside. Wood is a natural material so each piece carries grain variation, which means the box your recipient opens will be uniquely theirs.

Can I personalize the box with a name, date, or message? How many characters?

Yes, on most boxes in the collection. The standard Creative Crafthouse engraving option is up to 45 characters of personalized text, laser-engraved at our Hudson, Florida workshop. The engraving lands on the lid, the top panel, or the side of the box depending on the design (the product page tells you where for each specific box). Personalized engraving runs $4.00. A few of the boxes in this collection are sold un-engraved by default (the Mag Lock Customizable in particular is built around custom artwork plus a custom combination, which is a different process). For longer messages, company logos, or multi-line engraving, email sales@creativecrafthouse.com or request a quote for custom work. For fonts and engraving examples, see our laser engraving page.

Which boxes are easier for first-time buyers, and which are expert-only? Will the recipient figure it out?

If the box is a gift for someone who is not a serious puzzle solver, the easier the better. A wrapped gift card or wad of cash is meaningless if the recipient never opens the box. For first-time buyers and gift recipients, we recommend the easier mechanisms: the Secret Stash Cherry (sliding lid, most recipients open it in a couple of minutes), the Dragon Hurricane and its Hurricane series siblings (spin mechanism, intuitive once the recipient picks it up), and the 3 Wheel Combo (align the three wheels to the combination provided in the instructions, easy if you know it and tough if you do not). For an experienced puzzle solver, step up to a multi-step lock: the Secret Lock Box II Walnut, Mahogany, or Cherry (Bob Nolet design, requires a sequence of moves in the right order); the Stargazer XL for a longer multi-step solve in a bigger box; or the Butterfly Magnetic for the surprise of a second hidden drawer the recipient might not realize is there. None of the boxes in this collection are "expert-only" punishing puzzles in the Stewart Coffin / Martin's Menace sense; the role of a puzzle box is to make the gift inside feel earned, not to defeat the recipient. If you want a serious mechanical puzzle, head to our Stewart Coffin collection instead.

Does the box ship locked or unlocked? Will the gift inside survive the trip?

The boxes in this collection ship UNLOCKED so you can place the gift card, cash, or small item inside before wrapping. Every box ships with a printed instruction sheet showing how the mechanism works, which you can either keep aside (and let the recipient figure it out) or tuck in with the gift (and skip the puzzle). For the combination boxes, check the product page before you give it: some, like the Mag Lock Customizable, let you set your own code, while others, like the 3 Wheel Combo, open to a fixed combination that comes in the instructions. Standard packaging holds up to typical shipping handling; if you order an engraved box, we add light extra protection to the engraved surface during shipping. The contents you place inside (cash, gift cards, jewelry) are your responsibility; if a heavy or fragile item is going in the box, pack it the way you would pack a gift for shipping in any container.

Do you offer custom or branded boxes for an event, a company, an escape room, or a wedding?

Yes. We do custom work routinely. Common custom-box requests we run: custom artwork laser-engraved on a base box (for example, a company logo replacing the standard artwork on a Mandala or a Hurricane base); a custom combination set to a personally meaningful number (the Mag Lock Customizable is built for this); a multi-piece order for an escape room operator looking to outfit a room with custom-themed puzzle props; and bulk orders for weddings, anniversaries, retirement gifts, or corporate gifting programs. Email sales@creativecrafthouse.com or request a quote for custom work for pricing and lead time. Many of our boxes are already in use as escape-room props at professional escape rooms, including ones the Janelle family runs (Creative Escape Rooms is a separate family business that uses some of these same boxes in their rooms). If you operate an escape room and want to order at scale, sales@ will route you correctly.

Returns. What if the mechanism breaks, jams, or the box arrives damaged?

Full terms live on our shipping and return policies page (linked from the footer of every page). The short version: an unused, non-engraved box can be returned within the published return window. Personalized engraved pieces are made to order, so we handle those case by case. If the mechanism jams, breaks, or the box arrives damaged in shipping, we replace or refund without question; that is a manufacturing or shipping defect, not a return situation. Email sales@creativecrafthouse.com to start any return, replacement, or warranty claim, and Deb on our team will handle it personally. Wood is a natural material and very rarely a piece of grain settles in a way that affects the mechanism after shipping; if anything feels off when the recipient opens it, contact us and we will make it right.

Is there a bundle or gift-set option, and can I get free shipping by ordering more than one?

Yes. The most-frequent gift bundle for puzzle boxes is to pair a box with the gift going inside it (a Secret Stash plus a wrapped gift card, a Hurricane box plus folded cash) or to combine two boxes for two different recipients in one order. We do not currently sell pre-bundled puzzle-box gift sets in this collection (the curated gift sets and bundles in our Corporate Gifts collection are the formal route for multi-piece orders). On free shipping: U.S. domestic orders ship free over $99, and many of the boxes here individually approach that threshold, so two boxes or one box plus a couple of smaller puzzles often clear the bar. If you are putting a gift together and want a recommendation for what to add to push the order over $99, email puzzles@creativecrafthouse.com and we will send you two or three options matched to your recipient.
