I love math puzzles, and with the help of Ken Irvine of NJ, we came up with the Math Snake idea. The idea is to rotate them until there is a correct equation on all 4 sides of the blocks. The equation is read from left to right, irregardless of operation priority.

There is a 7 block model (here) and also a more difficult 9 block model offered on a different listing. They are high quality all wood construction with deeply burned laser engraved numbers from our shop in Hudson, FL. The blocks stay as a string but will rotate individually. The 7 block model may look easy, but its not really as there are 1024 possible permutations of the blocks, but only ONE correct solution. (Note on the 9 block version there are 16,384 permutations but only 1 correct solution.)

Ken Irvine wrote the program to develop the math layout on the blocks. As it turns out there are a number of possible ways to burn the numbers on the blocks and still have a unique solution. So there are 20+ different models we can offer on each of the 7 block or 9 block models. If you are a school teacher or puzzle enthusiast who wants more than 1 snake with each one being different I can do that for you! Just let me know how many different ones you want.

What is the Math Snake 7?

It is a wooden math brain teaser built as a string of seven connected blocks. The blocks stay linked but each one spins on the string, and your job is to turn them until all four long sides of the snake read as a correct equation. It was developed in our Hudson, Florida workshop with New Jersey puzzle designer Ken Irvine.

How do you solve it?

Rotate the seven blocks until every one of the four sides forms a valid equation read straight across. The catch that trips people up is that each equation is read left to right exactly as written, ignoring the usual order of operations, so 2 + 3 x 4 is worked in sequence rather than doing the multiplication first. All four sides have to come out right at the same time.

It looks easy. Is it really?

It looks simple but it is not. There are 1,024 different ways the seven blocks can be turned and arranged, and only one of them solves all four sides at once. Ken Irvine wrote the program that worked out the number layout to guarantee that single unique solution.

Who is Ken Irvine, and who created it?

The Math Snake was developed in our Hudson, Florida workshop together with Ken Irvine, a New Jersey puzzle designer who wrote the program that lays out the numbers. Irvine has created more than 50 puzzle designs since his first, "The Nagging Wife," and his puzzle Trifecta won a top-10 award at the 2015 Nob Yoshigahara Puzzle Design Competition.

Yes, this is one of our most popular pieces with teachers, homeschoolers, and math clubs. There are more than 20 different number layouts for the 7-block model, each with its own unique solution, so a whole class can work at once on snakes that look and solve differently, with no two students sharing the same answer. It is solid wood throughout, with the numbers burned deep into each face by laser engraving so they will not wear off with classroom handling. Each snake is cut, engraved, and finished by hand in our Hudson, Florida workshop.
