Descripción

Write a note that only the right person can read. The Mexican Army Decoder Disk is a working wooden copy of the Mexican Army Cipher Disk, the five-disk cipher wheel used during the Mexican Revolution, and it turns every letter of a message into two-digit numbers. We make each one in our family workshop in Hudson, Florida (Creative Crafthouse has been making wooden puzzles and games since 2003).

Here is how it works. The bottom disk carries the alphabet, A to Z. Turn the four number disks above it to any position and leave them there: that setting is your key (the wheel has 456,976 of them), which you write down as the four numbers under A (for example A-07-46-53-84). To encode, find each letter on the outer ring and write any one of the 3 or 4 numbers in its column. Because the same letter can come out as a different number each time, the code holds up far better against letter-frequency guessing than an ordinary alphabet-shift wheel. To decode, set the same key, find each number and read the letter at the end of its column. The short video in the product photos shows a key being set and a word encoded.

Constitutionalist forces used this cipher during the Mexican Revolution, and in 1916 U.S. Army codebreakers read an intercepted message that had been sent with one. Our wheel follows the same five-disk layout, with the numbers 01 to 99 and 00 spread across the four inner disks, so you are working the same method its operators used. It is a historical cipher, so a patient codebreaker can still crack a long message by spotting patterns, and that is the idea behind the three challenge messages that come with it.

We cut the disks from MDF faced with real cherry veneer and laser engrave every letter and number, so the columns stay sharp and easy to read. The wheel is 5.75 inches across and 1 inch tall, a size that sits nicely on a desk or bookshelf between messages. Reviewers mention how smoothly the wheels turn, and one wrote that they "purchased two for my family, and we're keeping them as heirloom items."

In the box you get the assembled wheel, an instruction sheet with a worked example and three secret messages to crack without the key (hints, keys and answers are on the back if you get stuck), and a worksheet for writing your own messages. The wheel works with letters only, so spell out any numbers. One wheel both encodes and decodes, but whoever reads your note needs a wheel and your key too, which is why some customers buy a pair. We can also laser engrave a name or short message on the back when you order.

It makes a great Christmas or birthday gift for someone into history or secret codes, and it gives a teacher a hands-on way to show a class how a real military code worked and how it was broken. It also works well as a prop in escape rooms, geocaches and treasure hunts. If you would like a wheel that can send numbers too, the Janelle Cipher Wheel grew out of this cipher's design and adds digits and a few symbols. You can see the rest of our cipher wheels and Enigma machines here.

Our “leprechaun” left encoded notes this year and a tool to decode them. The decoder was a big hit with my leprechaun hunters who followed the clues to the treasure!

This prop is perfection. The wood is strong and the laser writing is really very impressive. The owner is super nice and accommodating. My first cipher was sent to wrong dress (not his fault it was ETSY) and he sent a New one priority mail ! Looking forward to working with this owner again !

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Mexican Army Decoder Disk?

It is a working wooden reproduction of the Mexican Army Cipher Disk, the five-disk cipher wheel used during the Mexican Revolution. It turns each letter of a message into a two-digit number, and the same wheel turns the numbers back into words. We make it in our Hudson, Florida workshop from MDF faced with cherry veneer, with every letter and number laser engraved.

How do I encode and decode a message?

Turn the four number disks to any position and leave them there. That setting is your key, and you write it down as the four numbers under A, such as A-07-46-53-84. To encode, find each letter on the outer A to Z ring and write any one of the 3 or 4 numbers in its column. To decode, set the same key, find each number and read the letter at the end of its column. Group the numbers in fours or fives so word lengths stay hidden, and spell out any digits, since the wheel carries letters only.

Was this cipher really used in history?

Yes. Constitutionalist forces used the Mexican Army Cipher Disk during the Mexican Revolution, and U.S. Army codebreakers read an intercepted message sent with it in 1916. Our wheel follows the same five-disk layout, with the numbers 01 to 99 and 00 across the four inner disks, so you use the same method its operators used.

How hard is the code to break?

The wheel has 456,976 possible settings (26 positions on each of the four number disks), and every letter can be written 3 or 4 different ways. That makes it much tougher to crack by counting letter frequencies than a simple alphabet-shift wheel. It is still a historical cipher, so a patient codebreaker can break a long message by spotting patterns, which is exactly the challenge the three secret messages in the box give you.

How is it different from other wooden cipher wheels?

The wooden cipher wheels you see most often for escape rooms are two-ring wheels that swap one letter for another. The Mexican Army Decoder Disk has five disks, turns letters into two-digit numbers with several choices per letter, and recreates a real military cipher. At 5.75 inches across it also reads easily at a glance. If you want to encode numbers as well as letters, see the Janelle Cipher Wheel, which grew out of this design.

What comes in the box?

The assembled cipher wheel, an instruction sheet with a worked example and three secret messages to crack without the key, and a worksheet for writing your own messages. Hints, keys and answers for the three messages are printed on the back of the instruction sheet, so nobody stays stuck for good.

Do I need two wheels to send messages to a friend?

One wheel both encodes and decodes. To read your message, though, your friend needs a wheel of their own set to the same key, which is why some customers buy a pair, one to keep and one to give.

What is it made of, and how big is it?

The disks are MDF faced with real cherry veneer, and every letter and number is laser engraved into the surface, so the columns stay crisp. The wheel measures 5.75 inches across and 1 inch tall. The base disk is 1/4 inch thick, and the four number disks and the center cap are 1/8 inch each.

Who is it for?

History buffs and cryptography fans who want a real cipher to use, escape room builders who need a working prop (escape room operators use our props), teachers who want to show a class how a real military code worked and how codebreakers beat it, geocachers, and anyone planning a treasure hunt. One customer's "leprechaun" left encoded notes and a wheel for a St. Patrick's Day hunt. It is also a thoughtful Christmas or birthday gift for someone who likes secret codes. Browse our other cipher wheels and Enigma machines for more ideas.

Where is it made, and how fast does it ship?

We make every Mexican Army Decoder Disk in our family workshop in Hudson, Florida, where each disk is cut and laser engraved. Standard orders ship from our Florida workshop within 1 business day.

Can I personalize the Mexican Army Decoder Disk?

Yes. The Mexican Army Decoder Disk can be personalized with a custom laser engraving. Add a name, date, or short message when you order. See our laser engraving page for details and examples. For a custom logo or artwork, request a quote for custom work.
