The Butterfly Wood Puzzle Box is a handmade wooden lock box built for escape rooms, for the game master who wants a resettable, customizable prop that fits any story and looks the part instead of a generic padlock. Players place four magnet pieces on the correct four of the twelve numbered positions on the lid, and the drawer slides open. We make it at Creative Crafthouse, our family-run wooden puzzle and game shop, and handcraft this one in Hudson, Florida. The Mag Lock design is by Robert Justiana, a former lead in our workshop.
It is built to be run over and over, not solved once and shelved. The box is wood with the locking magnets set into the top board, the numbers and butterfly are lasered into the lid, and the code resets in a couple of minutes with four small screws, so you can change it between groups. At about 9 by 6.5 by 2.75 inches it reads clearly on a table or shelf, and the pull-out drawer inside (about 5.5 by 2.75 inches) holds a key, a note, or the next clue.
There are 495 ways to place the four magnets and only one opens the drawer, so it takes real logic and trial and error rather than a lucky guess. The drawer is in plain sight; the puzzle is the magnetic lock. Each one ships with the box and its pull-out drawer, four magnet pieces, your unlock code, and an instruction and solution sheet, and the code arrives preset so it works out of the box.
You can make it your own before it ships. Set your own four-number code, or swap the numbers for letters, symbols, or a mix; keep the butterfly art, choose from our artwork, or send your own image; and add a name, date, message, or a custom logo lasered into the lid to match a theme or a recipient. That customization is also why it works beyond an escape room, as a keepsake or gift box someone actually keeps. To request a custom code, lid, or artwork, contact us before you order.
