Descripción

Napier's Bones is a wooden calculating set for teachers, homeschool families and people who enjoy historical mathematics. John Napier described his rod-based method in Rabdology in 1617. Our Creative Crafthouse set lets you arrange the numbered rods and work through multiplication by hand. We make Napier's Bones in our Hudson, Florida workshop.

The 20 laser-engraved rods form two complete sets of digits 0 through 9. Having a second set lets you use the same digit twice in a number. The marked multiplication tables put the partial products in front of you as you follow the calculation.

The base set includes the 20 rods, a storage base, a wood cover and an instruction sheet with worked multiplication examples. It measures 7.5 by 7.5 by 0.75 inches. Square-root and cube-root bones are optional: choose No add-ons, Square Root Bone, Cube Root Bone or Both.

Use it to work through a multiplication example alongside a student, or give it to someone who collects mathematical instruments. We can engrave up to 45 characters on the bottom left of the frame.

For a different visual multiplication tool, see Genaille-Lucas Rulers, or browse our Montessori and STEM collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do Napier's Bones help with multiplication?

The wooden rods carry multiplication tables divided by diagonal lines. Arrange the rods for the digits in your number, then use the relevant row and combine the partial products. The included base instructions walk through multiplication examples so you can learn the method with the rods in front of you.

Who was John Napier, and why is 1617 associated with the rods?

John Napier was a Scottish mathematician who lived from 1550 to 1617 and is known for his work on logarithms. John Napier described calculation with rods in Rabdology, published in 1617. That is the publication date, rather than an exact date for the rods' first use.

What is included in the base set?

Twenty laser-engraved wooden rods, making two complete sets of digits 0 through 9, plus a storage base, wood cover and instruction sheet. The set measures 7.5 by 7.5 by 0.75 inches. Optional root bones are added only when you select them.

Why are there two sets of numbered rods?

Each digit in the number you are working with needs its own rod. Two sets let a digit appear twice, giving you more numbers to work with than a single 0 through 9 set would.

Which add-on should I choose?

Choose No for the base set, Square Root Bone to add the square-root tool, Cube Root Bone to add the cube-root tool, or Both for both root tools. The root bones extend the standard rods to the corresponding root calculations. If you already own the base set, see the separate Cube and Square Root Bones listing.

Do the included instructions teach every operation?

The base instruction sheet gives worked multiplication examples. It also notes that division is possible and explains that root calculations need an additional wider rod. Separate square-root and cube-root instructions explain those methods with worked examples.

Would this work for a lesson at home or school?

Yes. You can use the rods to work through a multiplication example with a student, discussing how the digit positions and partial products contribute to the answer. Start with the included multiplication instructions and introduce the optional root tools when those methods fit your lesson.

Can I personalize Napier's Bones?

Yes. Napier's Bones can be personalized with a custom laser engraving on the bottom left of the frame, up to 45 characters. Add a name, date, or short message when you order. See our laser engraving page for details and examples. For a custom logo or artwork, request a quote for custom work.

When will the set ship?

Standard orders ship from Florida within 1 business day. Personalized orders usually ship within 2 days; detailed custom work and larger quantities may take longer. See our shipping policy for shipping rates and transit information.

What if I need a return or there is an order mistake?

We provide free returns. If an engraving or address mistake comes from the information you supplied, we do not refund the item or shipping costs. If we make a mistake, we will refund or replace the item at no cost to you.
