For the person whose idea of a big night is not leaving the house, the Quarantine Activity Decider takes the last bit of effort out of planning one. This wooden pendulum decision maker names five ways to spend a day in: Shop Online, Order Take Out, Take a Nap, Play Games and Snuggle With Spouse. Push the pendulum, and magnets hidden in the board choose for you. It makes a funny Christmas gift for a homebody or a couple who would rather stay in, and a white elephant gift that gets its laugh the moment it is opened. Creative Crafthouse, a family-run maker of wooden games since 2003, builds every Quarantine Activity Decider in Hudson, Florida.

We first offered it in March 2020, as a fun distraction for everyone stuck at home that spring, and the joke has aged better than most things from that year. The five answers still fit any lazy day at home, snow days included, and Snuggle With Spouse gets the whole bottom edge of the board to itself. One buyer gave it five stars and wrote "Me encanta!" (Spanish for "I love it").

Our laser engraves the title and each answer into a rubberwood base. A curved wooden arm holds the pendulum, which hangs on a small metal screw eye and pairs a rubberwood head with a raintree shaft. Hidden just under the surface of the wood, a magnet waits beneath every answer, and the pendulum carries its own, so the swing sways back and forth before it comes to rest over one plan for the day. It runs without batteries or a plug. Red felt lines the bottom, which keeps the coffee table free of scratches.

Out of the box come the engraved base, a separate arm, the pendulum, an instruction sheet and the one screw that joins them. You supply a large Phillips screwdriver, since one is not included: turn the base felt side up, start the screw at the small hole, then drive it into the arm until it is snug. A pendulum that swings too low or too high over the answers is fixed with a turn of the screw eye. Put together, it rises 5.5 inches and needs a spot 7.7 inches long and 3.75 inches wide.

To make it theirs, a name or a date can be laser engraved on the front of the base (no more than 45 characters). Your note can come too, engraved on a 4 x 3 inch Baltic birch Wood Message Card packed with the gift. If your household's perfect day in looks different, we also make custom boards where you write the title and every answer, so ask us for a quote. Our Florida workshop ships a plain Decider within one business day; give us a second day when you add a message card or engraving.

Does the pendulum really decide?

It is meant for fun, not fortune telling. Every answer on the Quarantine Activity Decider sits over a hidden magnet and the pendulum holds one more, so where it stops comes down to your swing. If it picks Snuggle With Spouse, take it up with the magnets.

Who would love it as a gift?

The Quarantine Activity Decider is made for the homebody whose full day is takeout and a nap, a married couple (Snuggle With Spouse is engraved right on the board), a friend who works from home, and the white elephant or office swap crowd who will laugh at the name. What arrives, and how does it go together?

Inside are the Quarantine Activity Decider's engraved base, its arm, the pendulum, an instruction sheet and one screw. The box has no screwdriver, so borrow a large Phillips one: that screw enters through the red felt underside, at the small hole, and goes up into the arm. Turning the metal screw eye adjusts how high the pendulum hangs.

How much room does it take, and what wood is it?
