Description

Some days Mom would rather let something else make the call. The Mom's Decision Maker is a funny wooden gift for Mom: a pendulum board engraved with five choices, Hug Kids, Manicure, Shop, Exercise and Housework. She swings the pendulum, and the forces of the universe (a few well-placed magnets) settle it on one. Give it for Christmas, her birthday or Mother's Day, from the kids or from Dad; each one is made in our Hudson, Florida workshop at Creative Crafthouse, which has been in our family since 2003.

Only one of the five answers is housework, which seems fair to us, and the other four are the kind of afternoon most moms would happily be talked into. Every word is cut into the rubberwood base by our laser rather than painted on, so the lettering stays crisp on her dresser or nightstand. A magnet sits under each choice, with one more tucked into the pendulum, which is how a swing ends on a single answer, and nothing in it needs a battery. Red felt across the bottom keeps it kind to furniture.

If the kids are giving it, a grown-up will want to handle the assembly, because the one screw calls for a large Phillips screwdriver that is not in the box. Everything else arrives nicely packaged with the instructions: the engraved board, its arm and the pendulum. The screw goes up through the small hole in the felt into the arm, and the pendulum dangles from a metal screw eye you can turn to raise or lower it, which it rarely needs. Assembled, the Mom's Decision Maker takes up 7.7 by 3.75 inches of a nightstand or counter and rises 5.5 inches tall.

Engrave her name, or a line like "Mom of Three", on the front of the base (up to 45 characters), and send a Wood Message Card along with your note engraved on it. If her week runs on different choices, we can build one around them. Her order leaves Florida within one business day if it is plain, or a day later with engraving or a card.

No. The Mom's Decision Maker is wood, magnets and a little metal hardware, so there is nothing to charge or switch on.

Who puts it together, and how?

Anyone with a large Phillips screwdriver; we do not include one. The Mom's Decision Maker's one screw passes through the small hole in the felt-covered underside and into the arm, and the metal screw eye holding the pendulum turns if its height ever needs changing. If the kids are giving it, a grown-up helper is handy for this part.
