Description

If your dad spends half of every Saturday deciding between the to-do list and the recliner, this settles it for him. The Dad's Decision Maker is a wooden pendulum toy for his desk, with five answers lasered into a rubberwood base: Fix Something, Exercise, Take a Nap, Yardwork and Hug Kids. A flick sets the pendulum swinging, and a hidden magnet decides how his afternoon goes. Our family has run Creative Crafthouse since 2003 and makes every one in our workshop in Hudson, Florida. Christmas morning from the kids is the obvious moment for it, and a birthday or Father's Day works just as well.

Fix Something and Yardwork sit right next to Take a Nap, which makes every flick a bit of a gamble for Dad and a decent chance for you of finally getting the gutters cleaned. The lettering is lasered into the rubberwood rather than printed, so a desk he actually uses will not wear it away. There is a magnet hidden beneath every answer and a matching one inside the pendulum; when the swing runs out of steam, the closest magnet takes hold and the answer is final. No batteries, and a red felt underside protects his desk.

Dad gets to do the one bit of assembly himself. Along with the instructions he gets the engraved board, its curved arm and the pendulum, plus one screw. He flips the board over and runs the screw through the little opening in the felt and up into the foot of the arm, using a big Phillips screwdriver from his own toolbox (we don't send one). If the pendulum ever hangs a little too high or low over the board, a twist of the metal screw eye at the arm's tip adjusts it, though it seldom needs one. The base measures 7.7 inches by 3.75 inches, and with the arm on it is 5.5 inches tall.

His name, or a short line from the kids, can be engraved on the front of the base in up to 45 characters. A Wood Message Card with their note on it can travel in the same box. No. On the Dad's Decision Maker, Fix Something and Yardwork each get one spot out of five, the same as Take a Nap. Each answer has its own hidden magnet, the pendulum has a matching one, and the pendulum stops over whichever answer it reaches as the swing fades, no batteries involved.

Will Dad need tools to set it up?

The Dad's Decision Maker needs only a large Phillips screwdriver, which he will have to supply. There is one screw to drive, from the felt side of the board up into the arm, and the instruction sheet in the box shows where it goes. If the pendulum ends up hanging a little high or low, a twist of the metal screw eye on the arm fixes it.
