Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best brain teaser puzzles for adults?

Two of our best sellers are the place to start. Safecracker 50 is Dave Janelle's design: five rotating rings and sixteen columns, 1,048,576 possible positions, and exactly one where every column adds up to 50. Calibron 12 is our faithful reproduction of the 1933 puzzle by Theodore Edison, Thomas Edison's youngest son, and the job is to fit twelve wooden blocks into a single rectangle. For the hardest tier, Martin's Menace is Stewart Coffin's design number 217, made with his permission, and it belongs to our Impossible Puzzle Series, which we rate 11 out of 10. More of Coffin's designs are in our Stewart Coffin puzzles.

How do I choose the right difficulty?

Match it to the solver. We rate our puzzles on five levels: Easy, Intermediate, Hard, Expert and Impossible. The rating weighs the piece count, how similar the pieces are, the final shape, how much you have to picture in your head, and how much the order of moves matters. Easy or Intermediate suits someone new to wooden puzzles, Hard or Expert suits a solver who has finished a few, and the Impossible Puzzle Series is for the one who has solved everything else. Browse puzzles by difficulty.

Do you have puzzles that double as a gift box?

Yes. Our puzzle boxes hide a gift card, cash or a small keepsake inside. The Secret Stash, designed by Bob Nolet and made from cherry in our Hudson, Florida workshop, opens on a cue most people find within minutes. For a harder solve, the Secret Lock Box II is Bob Nolet's three-dial design, and each box has its own combination.

What are the cipher wheels and Enigma machines?

Working wooden cipher tools for writing and reading coded messages. Our concentric-wheel cipher disks, such as the Union Army and Confederate Army disks, came first. The Enigma machines use wooden gears, and the Enigma series was designed and built by Dave Janelle and Bob Nolet. Enigma III has double-sided gears with a different scrambled alphabet on each face, and Enigma 37 adds numbers. See all of our cipher wheels and Enigma machines.

Which games work for a group of adults?

Penny Drop is the easiest to bring out: the dice game Dave Janelle invented in 2015, recommended for 2 to 10 players and easy to learn in one round. Our dice games include bar games like Hi Roll and Golf Shot, and our board games include traditional two-player strategy games like Nine Men's Morris and Fanorona. If you want more evenings off the phone, our guide to screen-free things to do at night has more ideas.

Can I personalize a puzzle or game?

Yes. Every puzzle and game in this collection can be personalized with a custom laser engraving. Add a name, date, or short message, up to 45 characters, when you order. See our laser engraving page for details and examples. For a custom logo or artwork, request a quote for custom work. Personalized and custom items cannot be returned. If we make a mistake on your order, we'll replace or refund it at no cost.

How fast will my order ship?

Standard orders ship from our Florida workshop within 1 business day, and engraved orders within 2. Anything you don't personalize comes with free 30-day returns, and we pay the return shipping.
