What is Shut the Box?

A classic wooden dice game where you roll the dice and flip down numbered tiles to match the roll. The goal is to close, or shut, as many tiles as you can.

What makes the 1-12 version special?

It has tiles numbered 1 through 12, which opens up more math. You can add the two dice or multiply them. For example, roll a 4 and a 5 and call it 9 by addition or 20 by multiplication.

Can I still play the simpler 1-9 game?

Yes. Flip up the 10, 11, and 12 tiles and play it exactly like a standard 1 to 9 box.

Roll the dice, then flip down tiles that add or multiply to your roll. Keep going until you cannot make your number with the remaining tiles. The fewer tiles left standing, the better your score.

Why is multiplication an advantage?

Multiplying usually gives bigger numbers, which lets you flip more tiles in a turn, so it is the stronger strategy if you want to score well.

Is it good for learning math?

Yes. Teachers and homeschoolers use it for addition and multiplication practice, and the 1-12 version adds more challenge for older players.

All hardwood construction with the numbers burned into the wood so they clean easily and last the life of the game. The dice are handmade from the same wood. It uses wood and felt.

Shut The Box Game appeals to all ages. A wonderful family and educational game, also can be a fun gambling or drinking puzzle game. It is found in bars all over the world, but even more so in schools and often nursing homes too!!.

For you teachers and Homeschoolers and game players who want a little more thinking, this 1-12 version offers more opportunity for math challenges.

It will do everything the #1-9 version does by flipping up the numbers 10,11,12 and playing it just like a #1-9 box.

Bur significantly, you can use multiplication on this #1-12 version! For example, if you roll and 4 and a 5, you can call it either 4 + 5 = 9 (addition) or 4 x 5 = 20 (multiplication).

Its best to multiply if you want to do well in the game as you get bigger numbers and can flip more tiles.

Now the child must find numbers to add or multiply to 20 if they chose multiplication. More of a challenge....

This particular model from our shop is very nice. All hardwood construction, it focuses on quality with a premium feature of the numbers being burned into the wood, thus are easily cleaned and will easily last the life of the game. This model also has thicker wood in all areas than you will see in other makers boxes. The dice are handmade of the same wood as the game. It is available in RED or BLUE or GREEN.
