Description

Hexagon 10 is a handcrafted wooden packing puzzle for kids ages 8 and up, designed by Dave Janelle, founder of Creative Crafthouse. Its ten pieces, each a different combination of small hexagons, fit together inside a hexagon-shaped frame.

It arrives already solved, so you can see the finished shape, then take it apart and rebuild it. There are twenty solutions in all: one to start and nineteen more to find, three of them shown on the included solution sheet. Each piece is laser cut and engraved from quarter-inch alder, so the markings will not wear off and the grain differs piece to piece.

What is the Hexagon 10 puzzle?

Hexagon 10 is a wooden packing puzzle of ten different pieces that all fit together inside a hexagon-shaped tray. Each piece is built from small hexagons joined in a different combination, so no two pieces are the same. It was designed by Dave Janelle, the founder of Creative Crafthouse, and it arrives already solved in its frame so you can see the finished shape before you scramble it.

How does it work?

Every piece is made of little hexagons fused edge to edge, the way a domino is made of two squares, except here the counts and shapes vary from piece to piece. To solve it you arrange all ten so they fill the hexagon frame completely, with no gaps and no overlaps. Puzzle collectors call this a packing puzzle, and the hexagonal geometry is what makes it trickier than it first looks.

How many ways can it be solved?

There are twenty different solutions in all. The puzzle ships solved one way, and there are nineteen more arrangements to discover after that. The printed sheet we include shows three of them to get you started, and the rest are yours to find, which is why the puzzle keeps its challenge long after the first solve.

How hard is it, how long does it take, and who is it for?

It is a moderate challenge, and about twenty minutes is a good target for a first solve. It is designed for ages 8 and up. Homeschool and Montessori families use it to build spatial reasoning, and tabletop gamers have told us they use it as a physical puzzle prop in Dungeons and Dragons and escape-room style games. If a young solver breezes through it and wants a harder packing challenge, our Einstone Puzzle steps the difficulty up.

What is included, and what is it made of?

You get ten laser-cut puzzle pieces, the hexagon tray they sit in, and a printed instruction and solution sheet showing three of the solutions. The pieces are cut from quarter-inch alder, then laser engraved, so the markings will not rub off the way printed pieces do. Because the grain runs differently through every piece, each copy looks a little different from the next.

Does it come with a cover, and how big is it?

The puzzle comes solved inside its hexagon frame, and an optional cover is available to seal the solved puzzle so it can sit on a desk or shelf as a finished piece. The frame measures about 6 by 7 inches and is 0.5 inch thick.
