Roll the die and race your horse to the finish, unless it falls through one of the hidden trap holes! The Horse Race Game, also called the Falling Horses Game, is a wooden dice game for two players: you move a peg horse down the track by the roll of a single die, and some of the holes have no bottom, so a horse that lands on one drops right through the board into the box below and is out of the race. We make it at Creative Crafthouse, our family-owned wooden puzzle and game business since 2003, in our workshop in Hudson, Florida.

Easy to learn and full of surprises, it is fun for kids, adults, and seniors alike. In the basic game the die does the deciding, so a grandchild and a grandparent start on equal footing, and a horse that is out in front can still disappear on the next roll. We recommend it for ages 8 and up. The game board is maple veneer, laser-engraved for durability, and one customer calls it "beautifully made" and "sturdy and strong." It is not the horse racing party game that needs a deck of cards and a pile of chips; there is nothing to deal or bet, only the die and your horses.

Each player picks a peg color, and you take turns rolling the die and moving a horse that many holes from the start. Lose a horse down a trap hole and you send a fresh one out from the starting line. The first horse to reach the last hole on an exact roll wins, and if you run out of horses, your opponent takes the race. When you want more to think about, the rules sheet has an alternate version where you can have more than one horse on the track, must make a legal move every roll, and two horses can never share a hole. Every game comes with the board, twelve wooden cribbage pegs as the horses, six in each of two colors, a handmade die and a printed rules sheet. The board sits on top of its own box, so a fallen horse lands inside instead of rolling off the table, and the pieces store in there between games. The whole game measures 8.1 by 3.1 by 2 inches, a compact size that travels well to a cabin or a bar table.

This is a lovely wooden game, beautifully made. It is sturdy and strong, yet also really beautiful. I have ordered from this shop before, on the website, and have never been disappointed with the quality of their items. This item was one of many caught in the Canada Post strike in December, and the shop owners were very helpful, supportive, patient and communicative during that time, and eventually the item was delivered after the strike ended.
