What is the Enigma V Machine?

It is the most powerful cipher machine in our Enigma series, a handcrafted wooden device that turns plain messages into secret code and back again using five rotating gears. You set a starting key, turn the gears to scramble your message, and anyone with their own Enigma V and the same key can decode it. With its five double-sided gears the machine can be set to roughly 266 billion different keys. It was designed by Dave Janelle, our founder, and built in our Hudson, Florida workshop.

How does it actually work?

It works on the same idea as classic mechanical rotor cipher machines: turning wheels that swap each character for another. You choose a key by setting the order and starting position of the five gears, then use the included encryption worksheet to convert your message one character at a time into code. To read a message, the other person sets their machine to the same key and runs the steps in reverse. Without the key, the scrambled text is hard to read.

Where does the 266 billion number come from?

From the gears themselves. Each of the five gears is double-sided with 37 positions per side, which gives 74 possible settings per gear. The five gears can also be placed in any order, and there are 120 ways to arrange five gears. Take 74 settings for each of the five gears and multiply by those 120 gear orders, and you get about 266 billion possible keys. That is what makes it the strongest machine in the series.

What is on each gear, and why 37 teeth?

Each gear has 37 teeth carrying the full English alphabet (26 letters), the digits 0 through 9, and a decimal point. That adds up to 37, and it means you can encode numbers and decimals as well as words, so the machine handles things like dates, map coordinates, and dollar amounts.

Who designed it and how is it made?

It was designed by Dave Janelle, our founder, as the most advanced model in our Enigma cipher series. Each machine is handcrafted from hardwood in our Hudson, Florida workshop, with the letters and numbers cut in by deep laser engraving so they will not rub off after years of turning. The gears ride on alloy steel pins for smooth rotation. The base measures about 21 by 4.5 inches and each gear is 4 inches across.

How is it different from the other Enigma machines?

It offers the strongest encryption in the series and is the hardest to crack. Our earlier Enigma machines use fewer gears and fewer possible keys, while the Enigma V's five double-sided gears push the key count to about 266 billion. That means a message encoded on the Enigma V is the most difficult in our lineup to decode without the matching machine and key.

What is the $150 decryption challenge?

We offer a $150 cash prize to anyone who can crack our Enigma V decryption challenge. You must own an Enigma V to enter, there is a limit of one win per customer across the Enigma IV and Enigma V challenges, and employees and family of Creative Crafthouse are not eligible. A new challenge is currently in development, so watch the listing for details.

Who is it for, and does it work for escape rooms or team building?

It is built for cryptography hobbyists, puzzle collectors, and history buffs, and it is a natural fit for escape room designers, classrooms, and corporate team building. Because a sender and a receiver each need a machine set to the same key, it works as a shared challenge: hide an encoded clue, hand a team the key, and let them decode their way to the next step. Escape room and event hosts often buy more than one so both ends can encode and decode.

Where is it made and how does it ship?
