Define an initial gear order.  Each gear is labeled by A, B, or C. Set the gears on the pins in the order you select.\u003cbr\u003e2. Define the initial Key, 3 characters long.   The Key defines the gear orientations.  Arrange each gear such the pointer on the board points to the key letter on the Gear.  If the Key was DOG for instance, the first gear would be set to D at the arrow.  The second gear to O at the arrow; and the third gear to G at the arrow.  The The key can be embedded in the message or for better security it can be communicated separately.\u003cbr\u003e3. Write the english text that you wish to encode in the lines and boxes marked “Text” on the provided worksheet; or just on a piece of paper if you don’t have a worksheet.  Do not use spaces or punctuation.\u003cbr\u003e4. The right side gear is the English Text wheel.  To begin encryption, find the 1st letter of your message and align it with the arrow next to this wheel.  Read the corresponding letter that appears at the top arrow of the gear 1, which is the left gear on the board.  Write this letter in the “Code” block of your worksheet right below the letter you just encoded.    Next set the English Test wheel to the second letter of your message.  Read the encoded letter on the 2nd (middle) gear.  Repeat this process of going from the left gear(1) to the center gear (2).\u003cbr\u003e5. At any point along the way you can define a new wheel order or a new key.   This could be communicated separately or embedded within the message in a way you can devise on your own.   \u003cbr\u003e6. As an example, perhaps line the 5 wheels such that A - 122 - 99 - 62 - 10 are all in the same column. This sets the wheels for the Encoding or decoding process. Without turning the wheels, go to the first letter in your message.\u003cbr\u003eIf the message was “ SEND HELP TO 738 MAIN ST.” then you would find “S” on the out wheel and then pick any one of the 4 numbers in the S column (143, 120, 43, or 31 in this scenario). Then go to the next letter in the message “E”. Pick any number in that column, as so forth. Since E comes up again later in the message, you would likely chose one of the other numbers in the column next time you encoded E. In this message no letter is repeated more than 4 times, so every number in the encrypted message would be different. VERY hard to decode! And next to impossible without knowing the cipher. The method of communicating is usually by tapping either the metal bars, pipes or the walls inside a cell.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNote that this system is not limited in usefulness to just tapping sounds.  I could be used at night by flashlight code or in a field or ship to shore by flag waving or even ht in hand waving.  \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe tap code is based on a Polybius square using a 5×5 grid of letters representing all the letters of the Latin alphabet, except for K, which is represented by C.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEach letter is communicated by tapping two numbers, the first designating the row and the second (after a pause) designating the column. For example, to specify the letter \"B\", one taps once, pauses, and then taps twice. The listener only needs to discriminate the timing of the taps to isolate letters.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe letter \"X\" is used to break up sentences, and \"K\" for acknowledgments.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBecause of the difficulty and length of time required for specifying a single letter, prisoners often devise abbreviations and acronyms for common items or phrases, such as \"GN\" for Good night, or \"GBU\" for God bless you.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBy comparison, Morse code is harder to send by tapping or banging because a single tap will fade out and thus has no discernible length.
